The first week of the holidays

Thank goodness the bad weather from the weekend has gone. Strange how we always seem to have a couple of brilliant weeks just before the start of the holidays, yet the first few days of the holidays are always rainy... LOL

The kids are loving long lie-ins in the mornings and staying up late at night. I must admit, I'm enjoying that too ;~)

Chris is being great with Courtney for me, taking her to the Wildlife Park for walks and to the play park to go on the swings and slides. Wearing her out totally, which frees up some time for me.

Kelsey is helping around the house, she knows she has to if she wants to go swimming.. hehehe

The public swimming pool here lets the kids in free during the summer holidays, so that's a good deal, and makes our summer just that little bit cheaper.

Kyle is at his nans, earning money for new PS2 and Nintendo games. He "helps" her around the house, and she gives him his pocket money. He isn't aware that she'd give him the money even if he didn't help her LOL.

Summer Holidays

It's been a busy week, but a bit peaceful compared to how the next 6 weeks are going to be. The older kids broke up for their summer holidays yesterday, and although we WILL have lots of fun, there's going to be lots of tantrums and tears too.

Kyle enjoys the company of his siblings... up to a point. And when that point is reached, that's when all hell breaks loose LOL

I laugh now, but I'm truly dreading it. He's not a very sociable person, but on the bright side, we now have 6 weeks to do some intense "socializing skills" work ;~)

For the first time in any of my kids lives I've finally put a lock on my bedroom door. I bought a new bed this week, and it's the first really nice thing I've dared to get for myself in many years so I'm NOT taking any chances. LOL, especially now when there's going to be a lot of conflicts in the house ;~)

The kids had their new beds 3 weeks ago, lovely silver metal ones, and Kyle's already managed to bend his. He'd decided he wanted to see if he COULD do it.

In a way, I'm glad he's on ritalin and concentrating that little tiny bit more than before. The bad thing is that he tends to concentrate on the things he shouldn't be doing hahahaha.

Ah well, such is life, huh? With any luck we'll have lots of great weather during the holidays so that we can be out and about as much as possible instead of being stuck in the house. Don't get me wrong, being in the house has it's positive side sometimes. We don't get the "What a naughty child!" looks from people, and Kyle gets to watch the Care Bears.

You may think he's too old for that program, but seriously, if you have a child with attention deficiency hyperactive disorder I would highly recommend you get them involved with the Care Bears. Every program has a little "moral" to it, and Kyle definitely shows a tad more compassion and understanding after watching them.

I wrote a new book. It's a short and concise self-help book that I've called "Focus: The Key To Success". It covers 3 things that we all need: focus, self-confidence and self-discipline. Being the parent of a child with ADHD helped me write the book, as to make our lives better for us I HAVE to have those 3 things in my own life.

Hopefully the book will help a lot of other people, and also buy me some new furniture in the process ;~)

My Star Kyle. The First 8 Years

I've sat a few times and thought about putting our story into words. I ended up doing just that today. A very short and condensed version, but real nontheless.

It was so easy to write it, but reading it actually made me cry. I showed it to a friend and he said: "I had no idea what you've went through for so long, and what kids like Kyle go through."

That tells me more than anything that I did the right thing in writing it all down.

It's a pdf document, so if you want to save it rightclick on the link or the picture and choose "save as".

Many thanks to Gene Barry of http://www.quickgraphics4u.com and http://www.graphics4marketers.com for a brilliant ebook cover.

Hi Blogger,

I've seen this post before but important things are always worth reminding. After all, repetition is the mother of learning.

Hello Blogger,

Thank you for your informative blog, it is good to see that people are still sharing their knowledge and experience.

I am currently working on finding the latest information on kid adhd when I came across your site. My passion is in the area of kid adhd and after finding your blog, I believe we have a real synergy and that my subsrcibers would benefit from your perspective on the topic.

I would very much appreciate it if you would take the time to have a look at my adhdpodcaster blog. If you think that we do have a common goal (which I think we do), then please feel free to post any relevant information to the blog.

Whatever area that ties into adhd would be fine, even if it is with relation to personal development (especially time management), you know how notoriously hard it is to keep track of time especially for us :)

Anyways, really looking forward to your post.

Thank you for the blog, keep up the good work

Warmest regards,
Hoe Bing

Children with ADHD

There is a perplexing state of affairs in today's society, there lies a strong correlation between the affluence of a society and the amount of disease that is present. There is also another correlation that troubles many a people and that is with affluence comes disease at an Earlier age.

Working with children and the parents of these children I often get asked the question, 'Why are Children with ADHD on the increase?'

The answer as you shall find is one that is both interesting and challenging.

Children of today are really no more different from the children of yesterday in terms of genetic makeup. However, if you examine the issue more closely you will tend to find that many children today have been given labels. For example, 'Oh, those are children with ADHD' or 'Those are the children who can't sit still.' Or 'That is the kid that always gets into trouble.'

These labels are not only destructive but also become a self fulfilling prophecy as it is repeated adnauseum.

So as a 21st century parent or a parent with a child with ADHD or a parent with children with ADHD, what knowledge framework do you need to equip yourself with to ensure your children live out their true potential?

Here is a quick reference list for thinking about ADHD
ADHD is a source of great frustration because it is misunderstood
ADHD medications are a great short term time buying device and should be avoided long term
The above point goes for any sort of drug consumption. Think about it for a minute. Unless you have a biochemical deficiency in your body like Type 1 diabetes where your body fails to produce enough insulin or any at all, why would you take an external drug? A body that is in balance is totally healthy. It is only when the body is out of balance that dis-ease symptoms start to creep up.
ADHD is a biochemical imbalance of the mind and body.
The Head of Psychiatry in Harvard states that drugs for ADHD simply mask the effects of ADHD. It does not cure ADHD. This is an important point because a cure implies never to have to take the medication. This means that once you start on medication you will have to be on it for the rest of your life i.e. you have medically acquired a dependency for a biochemical imbalance. That is like stuffing all your rubbish (problematic behaviors) into a closet (medication) where no one can see it. But if you continue to stuff more rubbish into that closet, one day you will not have enough space and need to do one of two things. You either empty the rubbish (the natural conclusion) or you get a bigger closet (i.e. change to stronger medication to control the symptoms). The choice is obvious but sometimes when you don't have the necessary tools to deal with ADHD you tend to think the bigger closet is the only option.
ADHD children are super sensitive to the emotions around them. Often they pick up emotional cues from their parents without realizing. Many parents come home frustrated or annoyed from work, the child with ADHD picks this up and starts to 'cause trouble' by becoming restless. Parents frustration increase because they just want some peace and quiet. They get angry which in turn is picked up by the child who then intensifies their activity. Things get way out of hand and some sort of punishment is handed down to the child who has no idea what just happened. The cycle repeats itself every so often.
Our brains are wired emotionally. Positive praise is interpreted as an analytical/thinking exercise. Negative criticism including scolding, name calling, physical punishment all go directly to the emotional brain of children with ADHD. This means in order to ensure you get your message across in the most optimal way, you need to learn how to communicate with your ADHD children the way they like to be communicated with.
Every negative comment requires 16 positive comments to neutralize the emotion. Save yourself the frustration and agitation by practicing positive communication.

The list is by no means complete. In dealing with children with ADHD there are a certain set of behavioural principles to follow. I will detail these steps in the coming weeks. I'll also build on the list as you continue to learn about what appears to be a mystical disorder known as 'Children with ADHD'

Something Fun

With Kyle having such a short attention and concentration span, I'm constantly thinking up new things to try to keep him occupied. I know that if I don't then every bit of shampoo and bubble bath tends to disappear, or kitchens get flooded, or worse still, he wanders off.

One of the things we have been doing this summer is making (and playing with) "ribbon sticks". Out of all the things we've come up with, this one really seems to grab his attention and he'll play for AGES. You might find it worth trying sometime.

Ribbon Sticks

For this you need nothing more than some strips of wide ribbon and some bamboo sticks. A few 4ft sticks will do. Snap them in half and tie a length of ribbon to one end. Make the ribbon length no longer than what the kids can handle.

Let the kids loose with the sticks and tell them to try to make shapes, circles, and snakes etc just like the gymnasts do on T.V.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Links

Having no kids today gave me time to collect a few of the website links of the places I've visited often in my quest to learn more about ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder).

I've added them to the sidebar of this page. If you know of any other useful places, please do let me know so that I can link to them. There's a lot of information out there, we just have to make it available to everybody.

If you've had any experience with any support groups or websites, feel free to share your stories with me. I'd love to hear them.

Time For Myself

I am one of the lucky ones. Not everybody gets a "stress-break" away from the kids, and that can be hard. Believe me when I say it's even harder for parents of a child with ADHD. Ok, I get a break nowadays, but there was a time when I never got a break so I do know how important it is to make time for yourself as a parent.

See, with our other kids, we're always protective, and we worry about them lots, but with our ADHD children those feelings are intensified. Why? Because of thoughts like this: "Nobody else understands.", "Everybody thinks our child is unruly or naughty.", "My childs brothers and sisters are getting jealous of the amount of time, energy and attention my child needs."

Thoughts like these make it really hard for us to "let go" and let other people help us when we need it most. I was guilty of this for the longest time, until it got to the stage where I was almost totally burnt out.

I decided i HAD to tell friends and family about the way things were, and not gloss over it constantly. If I needed a break, I knew I had to ASK other people to step in, like my mother, or my best friend. People aren't mind-readers, so without letting them know what's going on, they can't possibly know that we need their help.

I still remember the first time I ever mentioned Kyle's problem to my mother. Years ago, long before he ever got diagnosed. She went mad at me. Told me I was imagining the whole thing etc etc etc. She really thought I was just stressed out and blaming it on Kyle. It took a while to get her to see, but with constant communication she DID start to see where I was coming from.

That's when she started taking Kyle off my hands for a week every now and again, and taking all the kids for the Saturday night. Seriously, I don't know how I coped without time for myself before. I suppose I just struggled along and numbed myself as much as I could by ignoring my own feelings.

What I'm saying is, if you have a child with ADHD, he is likely to need a lot more of your energy and attention than you feel you can give at times. Tell your friends and family. Tell them you need a "stress-break", even if it's only for a couple of hours.

Believe me, you'll feel so much better for it and your child will have had the pleasure of some one-on-one time with somebody who cares about him/her.

Take the time to de-stress, go watch a movie, soak in the bath or do some exercise. Spend time with your spouse, or friends. Anything that you find pleasurable. Just go ahead and do it, and don't feel guilty about being away from your kids, they are fine, and probably happy to be out of the "stress-zone" for a couple of hours too ;~)

Happy Summer Days

Chris finally got out of bed, and we finally found the keys. We spent a little time in the back garden and now the 2 big uns are watching the 2 little uns riding their bikes out in the front street. It's so nice to live in a quiet area. Definitely makes life easier when the kids can actually go out and not have to worry about cars and such-like constantly.

We took a couple of pictures in the back garden. The weather is just glorious :~D

This first pic is of Chris and his best friend (my Alsatian) Belle.

In this picture Courtney has found an ants nest that was uncovered by "somebodys" small feet kicking a couple of stones off the border.. LOL

Here are my 2 angels, Courtney and Kyle. Seriously, wherever Kyle is, Courtney is never far behind and she's forever copying everything he does. Sometimes that's a good thing, most times it isn't ;~)

In this pic, Kelsey is trying to get Courtney to let HER use the slide. Of course, Courtney promptly tells her she's too big... hehehe.

After sliding down, Courtney says "Mum, I'm glad you don't cut the grass in this bit of the garden, if you did I would probably hurt my bum!"

Here Kyle tests out his photography skills. Actually not a bad pic, don't you think?

Well, that's all for now. Gotta get these kids ready to go to their nans, and then I'm REALLY going to enjoy the sunshine. I'll probably sleep in the back garden and get burnt to a crisp, but sun is sun and we don't get enough of it here. Best to make the most of it while we've got the chance.

Happy Saturdays?

Today started off with beautiful sunshine and Kyle making breakfast for him and Courtney. It's not often he'll do things like that, so I was quick to tell him how proud I am of him and how clever he is.

Unfortunately it doesn't look much like we're going to get the chance to enjoy the sunshine this morning as my house-keys have gone walkabouts.. LOL. Kyle remembers holding them, he just doesn't remember where he put them. Ooops.

So it looks like we'll be spending the morning searching the house for my keys. Chris isn't going to be much help in the quest, as he's still in bed. Typical teen "It's the weekend, so I'm not getting up!" hahaha.

Kelsey, poor thing, has been helping me look after Kyle and Courtney this morning. she SO wishes there was school on the weekends too. See, Kyle isn't a very socialble kid, he prefers to be on his own with me, so when all the kids are home it tends to turn into a warzone.

Luckily for me I've learnt to blank out most of it and only react when it gets bad, like when they're flooding the bathroom etc.

I do love my Saturdays though. It's the day when my mother takes all 4 kids off my hands so that I can have a break, and gawd knows I need it by the time the weekend comes along.

Every now and again she'll take Kyle for a whole week, which is both good and bad. The good points are that the kids get a break, I get to relax and the fighting stops. The bad point, and there's only one, is that he comes back totally hyped up from all the sweets and stuff he's had that whole week...lol

Oh well, you win some, you lose some eh? Anyway, time to go on a treasure hunt. wish me luck in finding my keys ;~)

Finding the positives

First I'd just like to say thanks to everybody for their wishes, thoughts and prayers. So many great people out there, sometimes it's hard to believe we're all sitting behind monitors ;~)

Ya know, in comparison to 9/11 this was a tiny thing and amazingly little panic. People were still going about their biz as usual just a couple of hours after the first explosion. Brits seem to handle things well and nothing much phases us. It's that stiff upper lip thing.

Out of all the news clips and live news things I've been watching I don't think I've seen one person crying or panicking, apart from maybe a relative or 2.

London and the Uk has had a history of unrest. Things like IRA and bombings in WW2 etc, it's almost like we're immune to it all and we have an "ok, it happened, lets fix it" kind of attitude.

As a country we're outraged, yeah, but that's about it. Heck, even G8 started up again soon after the explosions, because that's "more important".

It's good though. Not showing weakness at times like this makes these horrible acts less effective. We just give them the finger and say "Hey! You can take our lives but you can't take our freedom!"

Some ppl are scared, others will probably never use the underground again, but it'll be a case of "life goes on" just as it always is ;~)

Anna

Comments:
One of the benefits of living in the "free world..."

These terrorist infidels will never understand what it is to live WITHOUT the fear of their totalitarian overlords, and thus, the central error of the idea that fear WORKS to motivate us toward anything whatsoever...national and corporate outrage, certainly, but then individually, we each know the truth that LIFE GOING ON without the need for revenge, is the HIGHEST form of CONTEMPT for the atrocities...the best revenge as individuals is simply to shrug off any need of individual revenge at all.

THIS is the JUSTICE that God requires of each of us.

With all my prayers for you and yours, individually and nationally... Francis Carmody

Hi Francis

I totally understand how you feel, and truly appreciate your thoughts.

The thing that gets me is that we still don't know for sure WHO did this. Blair blamed it on terrorists, and everybody jumped to the conclusion that it was Al Qaeda extremists or similar.

As it stands now, for all we know it could have been a couple of 16 year olds who learnt how to make bombs when surfing the net, it could have been the IRA, it could have been somebody who is unhappy with our government. It could have been just about anybody. We just don't know for sure yet.

Either way, whoever did it IS to be classed as a terrorist, because it's a pure terror attack on innocent people.

We have been lucky...

We finally received word that my cousin is ok. Perfectly fine even. She hadn't gone to work today, although she couldn't explain why. No matter. I'm glad she stayed home and is safe.

Watching bits on TV still, people are being removed from the Victoria Station by "panicked" policemen, as they seem to have found a suspicious package there. Hopefully it's just something someone has left behind and nothing dangerous.

The news has slowed down a lot, so it might be best if I get my kids ready for bed. As always, I'll make sure that the last thing I say to them before they go to sleep is "I love you".

Please don't forget to tell your loved ones how you feel about them often. "I love you" can never be said often enough.

A Touch Of Normality

It hasn't been the greatest day of the year, but things are calming down a little bit now. The children in the schools around the area of the bombings are being kept in school until they can be taken home safely or until their parents/carers can get to the schools to be with them.

The police are asking people to NOT go into London tonight at all, so that they can try to get things back to some kind of normailty. Buses and trains have started running again, although some are still suspended.

Here at home it's been quite difficult explaining to Kyle what's been happening. He's seen it all as he's home educated and was watching TV with us today, but he doesn't quite "get it". Actually, I'm quite grateful for that, he's way too young to have to worry about things like this.

The older kids came home from school and Chris immediately called his nan, just as I suspected he would, to make sure she was ok. He knew she'd be worried about my cousin, so he had to call her and discuss what has been happening all day.

Unfortunately, we still haven't had any news of my cousin, so my mother and my aunt are walking around as if they're on hot coals. Hopefully now that things are calming down it shouldn't be too long before there's some good news to report.

I've had tons of emails from people wishing us all well and sending prayers and thoughts to our family. I really appreciate everybodys thoughts. Thank you.

New Numbers in London Blasts

Sky news just reported that there are at least 40-45 dead, and upto 1000 injured. Plus the ca.150 seriously injured.

23 dead at Kings Cross, 9 at Edgeware , 7 at Aldgate and 2 at Russel Square.

Of these the numbers at St. Mary's right now were said to be 36 casualties, where 6 are critical and 17 are serious.

My mother just called me, still no news about my cousin. People are having a hard time trying to get in touch with loved ones due to the mobile networks and landlines being down.

I was watching Fox News Live, they reported that the americans are stepping up their security again. Seems they have the same idea as a lot of other people, that the terrible incidents in London may have only been a warning. Let's hope they are wrong!

Helicopter News

If you have Sky Digital, EuroNews on channel 528 is showing live helicopter coverage.

Emergency services slogging their guts out making sure everything is as ok as they can make it.

Bewildered people refusing to listen to the police who are trying to divert them etc.

6 blasts on the underground and one on a bus above ground.

Londoners people are coping by trying to "carry on as normal".

About 150 Seriously Injured so far

Latest news: About 150 seriously injured so far, no other numbers. Any number is still way too many. Amazing that the number is so low, though considering the sheer mass of people commuting in that area at the time of the explosions.

Sitting watching ITV news live coverage at the house of Commons. Getting irritated at the speakers saying they'll now stand behind Blair no matter what. Shame they didn't show their support at the time of the Twin Towers, when he did what he thought was right.

Just heard Al Qaeda Group is claiming responsibility, guess it'll be a while before we know for sure.

All emergency departments and hospitals in the area are doing a great job. It's always good to know they're around for us, even for the times like this that we wish would never happen.

London Explosions. Treated as Terrorist Attacks

Sitting here watching breaking news about at least 7 explosions in London this morning. Worried about my cousin, she commutes and was in the area at the time of the explosions.

She calls home every day when she gets to work, no phonecall yet.

Above ground looks bad, I can't imagine how bad it must be in the underground. News and updates here: CNN.com The BBC News site is pretty overloaded right now, so hard to get it to load.

Lots of casualties, no numbers on fatalities.

Schools are being told to "carry on as usual" and parents are being told to stay in the schools. Wide areas being evacuated due to indications of more explosives.

Bloggers are updating with more news, links here: http://www.blogherald.com/2005/07/07/london-bombings-blogs-covering-from-the-frontline/

My Family and ADHD

As this is my 2nd blog, I'm just trying out the different templates and colours etc to see which one we like best. Kyle (8) chose this one, so we'll see how it looks.

I have 4 children. Chris is the "almost" unruly teenager, at 15 he's probably the most sensible kid I've ever met in my whole life. Chris is in full-time school, and next year (September) he will be starting on his GCSEs.

Kelsey is 12, born on Halloween she's our own "personal little witch", a nickname that's stuck with her since birth.. LOL. Kelsey started high school this year, and apart from a few incidents where she was getting bullied, she is really enjoying school. Then again, she always did love school. Don't think I've ever met another kid who cries if she's ever unable to go for some reason...

Kyle is 8, he's recently been diagnosed with ADHD after a long, hard fight to even get him seen by a specialist. Thankfully we now know what we're working with, and we can stop banging our heads against the wall. Kyle can be a handfull at times, but he's our "Star". When he smiles, the whole world lights up, and people can't help joining in on the smiles.

Then there's Courtney, our "baby". She's almost 5, and in fulltime school and loving it. It's long days for such a young kid, and she can be testy at times, but she's an angel really.... hahaha, well at least she is when she's not copying everything Kyle does. Courtney ADORES Kyle, and looks on him as her idol.

And then there's me, the one responsible for holding it all together. It can be difficult at times, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I find there's constantly something new to learn about kids, even after having 4 of them. It's a never-ending story, and I'm loving it.

The things they say, the things they do, it all still amazes me as much now as it did when I first had Chris. I love how they're all the same yet so different. Life is good! :~D
